Broadway and MLK Streetscape Improvements - Surveys

The Oakland Department of Transportation (OakDOT) is working to deliver projects that will strengthen connections between West Oakland, Chinatown, Downtown, Old Oakland, and the Jack London District.

Martin Luther King Jr Way Streetscape Improvements

Focused on MLK Jr. Way between 2nd Street and 14th Street, the project will design and construct improvements aimed at improving pedestrian and bicyclist safety along Martin Luther King Jr. Way, including bike facilities, curb ramps, bulb-outs, and high-visibility crosswalks.

The project will plant new street trees to make the neighborhood more climate resilient, and it will also install fiber optic cable to expand free OakWiFi.

To take the short survey,  visit: www.oaklandca.gov/mlk

Broadway Streetscape Improvements

Focused on Broadway between 2nd and 11th Street and between 20th Street and Grand Avenue, the project aims to improve safety and accessibility for people who walk, roll, and take transit along Broadway.

The scope of improvements has been informed by previous community engagement and adopted plans. Improvements include curb extensions, ADA curb ramps, high visibility crosswalks, bus-only lanes, and improvements to the Broadway/I-880 underpass (such as pedestrian lighting).

To take the short survey,  visit: https://www.oaklandca.gov/broadway

Dr. Huey P. Newton Way Dedication

A three-block section of 9th Street in West Oakland will be re-named to Dr. Huey P Newton Way. According to Fredrika Newton, Dr. Newton's widow and the founder/president of the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation: “The street naming is the first of many initiatives that the Foundation has undertaken to promote and celebrate the incredible work and legacy of the Black Panther Party here, in Oakland. To have this go up during Black History Month and with the support of city residents and officials is especially significant and something about which we can all be proud.”

Visit the Foundation website for more information and to donate.
